SAUHMA Conference 2007 -
Refresher course in Underwater Medicine 2007
We would like to invite you to attend a Refresher Course in Underwater
Medicine hosted by SAUHMA under the auspices of the University of Stellenbosch
as a designated course recognised by the Department of Labour for re-designation
as a diving medical examiner in terms of the Diving Regulations.
In previous years we have had difficulty in gaining acceptance for the SAUHMA
conferences as meeting the requirements for a refresher. Therefore, this year
the conference is actually presented as a refresher course by the University of
Stellenbosch, recognised by the Department of Labour. In addition to the
contents of the refresher course, there will also be a number of presentations
on the management of common fitness-to-dive problems, insight into current
fitness to dive standards and an overview of changes coming in the new Diving
Regulations, 2007.
Delegates attending the conference as a refresher will be required to write a
short multiple choice questionnaire on the last day.
This course focuses on fitness to dive criteria and how these are applied and
it is specifically aimed at Medical Practitioners that are designated in terms
of the Diving Regulations. All persons interested in fitness-to-dive
issues will also benefit from attending the conference and there will be ample
time for questions and interaction with speakers.
Topics that will be covered include overviews of the different organ systems
and specific fitness standards that apply to these. New guidelines in
terms of specific diseases (e.g. diabetes, asthma) are presented. There
will be a whole session dedicated to the expected changes in the Diving
Regulations and the impact of these in practice. Case-studies of
complicated cases that were referred to the Diving Medical Panel and court cases
will also be presented.
The link with Occupational Medicine and the requirements thereof in
commercial diving is addressed and the role of functional assessments is
addressed.
