SAUHMA Conference 19 to 21 June 2009
Update on Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine: Current state of affairs and what
the near future holds
The
setting for the 2009 SAUHMA conference will be the splendid Zevenwacht wine
estate in Cape
Town!
http://www.zevenwacht.co.za/zw_contact.html
This
conference will serve the purpose of informing the SAUHMA members of some
important developments in diving and hyperbaric medicine. The impact of
the new Diving Regulations, 2009 on the practice of diving medicine in
South
Africa is
enormous!
The
requirements for designation of medical practitioners have been amended and in
stead of having just one level of designated medical practitioners, there are
now three levels.
Designated
medical practitioners are also specifically regulated in the new Diving
Regulations, 2009 and all medical practitioners involved in the evaluation and
treatment of divers must be aware of their duties in terms of the
regulations.
An
introduction to occupational medicine principles in diving and the interaction
of designated medical practitioners with occupational medicine practitioners and
specialists in the certification of divers and other personnel will provide new
perspectives in fitness certification of personnel involved in diving
operations.
Dr.
Frans Cronjé will provide information on current projects of the International
Divers Alert Network, with specific reference to DAN
Southern Africa.
On
the hyperbaric side we are privileged to have Dick Clarke as a speaker, who will
provide an update on the evidence-base of the primary indications (diabetic
foot, radionecrosis and crush injuries) for HBO therapy. He will also
provide an overview of current multicentre trials in HBO and review some of the
old controversies and new emerging indications.
The
approach to hyperbaric safety and the SAUHMA accreditation process is covered by
our local expert, Francois Burman. Some “tricks of the trade” in running a
hyperbaric facility is presented by our international speaker.
Lastly,
we discuss training (both theoretical and practical) in diving medicine and
hyperbaric medicine. The current status is reviewed and the future
highlighted with an international perspective of where Southern
Africa is
heading. International accreditation of training courses is also
discussed.
The
2009 SAUHMA conference will be packed full of topics relevant to everyday diving
and hyperbaric medicine practice. This is definitely not a conference to
miss!! Book your place early, as the number of delegates that can be
accommodated is limited!
